Vola Sangiovese (Italy, 2009)

Category: SangioveseEddie @ 5:23 pm
This is a limited time availability wine available from Trader Joes.  We’re not certain if it will return again this year or if it is gone for good.  Very hard to pass up at $1.99 a bottle and we were not disappointed when we opened up the first one at home.  This flavor profile and texture of this wine can be found in others for $8 – $10.  If you can still find this at your TJ’s pick it up!!!
$2 from Trader Joes
Four Trophies
  • Smells of strawberries, pepper and sawdust
  • Soft mouth feel and is very smooth after decanting
  • Tastes of cedar and nectarine with a medium finish
  • Changes and evolves as you drink it.  This is a wine that keeps you interested all the time… You know its crazy buy you enjoy your time with it… it’s fun because you don’t know what is coming next… but it all makes sense when you realize it is a very schizophrenic wine.

I tend to love earthy Italian wines – those that can stand up against a deep blue cheese, strong cured meets, etc. The Vola Sangiovese 2010, at 2.49 a bottle in Northern Virginia, is not quite up to that standard, but it is a smooth drinking wine, and a shocking value. Picked up a case last night and enjoying a glass now.

Picked up a bottle just to see what a $1.99 wine tasted like and was flabergasted! It’s great I went back and picked up six more. My wife liked it when I told her it was $19.99 a bottle. But when I told her it was $1.99 each, she didn’t care for it anymore. More for me!!

Donna, this wine comes in and out at our local TJ’s and may very well not be at every TJ’s. Just keep an eye out maybe it will show up one day!

I have attemped to locate this wine at 3 TJ’s in So CAl. No luck. they have never heard of it. Any sugggestions?

  5. Gail says:

Interesting. At the price of $2.99 had to try, have found many excellent wines at TJ’s for these prices. It is in fact schizoprenic! At first taste it was too sweet. The taste lingers in a very pleasant way making the mouth happy and full feeling. Back tomorrow to by more.

    Glad everyone likes this wine!!

I also bought this wine on a whim. I gave my husband the blind-taste test. He liked it and couldn’t believe it when I told him the price. There’s a definite difference between the 2010 and the 2009! We prefer the 2009, for sure. I don’t get how they can sell such a good wine for such a low price. I’m going back for more and not soon enough.

I picked this up @ TJs in Tempe AZ on a whim. This is a damn good bottle of wine for the price. It is not a fancy wine, but it is a great drinking wine for anything short of that,at a price you just can not beat.I will pick up some more for sure.

bought a bottle, surprised at the taste for such an inexpensive wine… went back to buy a case, TJ was out…. going back next week.. to get two cases… LOVE THIS…

  11. Colin says:

The Vola red (Sangiovese)is very quaffable and excellent value – $1.99 a bottle is ridiculously cheap for a wine that is more in the $6 – $10 range (I have tasted many inferior wines at $8+).

I tried the white. Fortunately, I only bought one bottle to taste. I thought it was absolutely awful. Try it yourselves but my strong advise is to taste it first before you go big on the strength of the red.

I came over from CA to help my brother refurbish his condo in Las Vegas. Stopped at the Trader Joe’s at Green Valley and Sunset for staples. I couldn’t stomach another ounce of two buck chuck. Bought a couple bottles of Sangiovese Vola. The next day we went back and bought two cases. He took one back to Minnesota with him.

  13. Nick says:

Uhm, I thought the 2010 was undrinkable. Yuck.

I am sipping as I type… The 2010 vintage is in, picked it up at Tj’s in MI for 2.49 a bottle, and decided to go back tomorrow for a case. You should, too!

  15. Doug says:

Stopped at TJ’s in Mesa, AZ looking to pick up a bottle of Old Moon. Saw this on display and decided, what the heck, for $1.99 I’ll try one. Wow, what a surprise. I went back the next day and got a case.

  16. Ken Masterson says:

I just bought some Sangiovese Vola at TJ, and I will KEEP buying 2 bottles a shopping trip until they stop carrying it. Delicious, and cheap. You won’t be disappointed, I think. 2 bucks a bottle is a wicked deal.

  17. Karen says:

Bought this wine a TJ’s in Tucson. Thought it was great – especially the price ($1.99). As a canadian – comparable wine in Canada would be around $12.00. Wish we could have brought back a case or two.

  18. Nanci says:

Found it at TJ’s this year in Carson City, NV FOR $2.99. Bought a case. Very nice red wine!

  19. r cunningham says:
