Martha Stewart Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma, 2005)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 12:30 pm
Martha Stewart Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon This is our second review of one of the wines in the new Martha Stewart line that was released last year.  Earlier we reviewed the Merlot from the collection. The wine is produced and distributed by E & J Gallo Winery, of Modesto, Calif and made from grapes from the Sonoma region.  The wines are so far only available in the select cities of Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, Phoenix, and Portland.  The wine is usually sold in the $15 price range, but we recently picked some up on clearance for $6.  It will be interesting to see if they make any changes to the wines this year.  Overall we think these wines should be better if they intend to sell them in the $15+ range.
$15 ($6) from Bashas.
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of mint and hickory BBQ.
  • Tastes of oak wood and strawberry.
  • Great food wine with a medium finish.
  • This wine is like watching a good movie by yourself… the movie is pretty decent and you find it entertaining… but at the end of the movie, you wish you had someone else there to share it with.

Martha Stewart Vintage Merlot This is one of the wines in the new Martha Stewart line that was released last year.  There is also a Cabernet and a Chardonnay available. We have also reviewed the Cabernet and will be posting that review soon.
$15 ($6) from Bashas.
Three Trophies
  • Aromas vanilla and fresh green beans.
  • Flavors are complex, but tend to compete with each other.
  • Strong blueberry flavors that improve after decanting.
  • Smooth and very dry.
  • Very fruit forward but not sweet.
  • This wine is like a “buy one get one free” coupon to a semi-upscale restaurant that you haven’t been to before… you are happy that you went, but wouldn’t go back if you didn’t have another coupon.

Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon (California 2005)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 3:59 pm
Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon This wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma California. This is the legendary “2 Buck Chuck” that is sold exclusively by Trader Joe’s. There has been speculation and stories about why this wine is being sold for $2. According to Trader Joes however, the value priced Charles Shaw wines began as a result of an excessive supply, not because of other urban legends you may have heard. For the price, this is a great wine well worth giving a try. We have compared this wine to others in the same price point and above ($6.00 – $10.00 a bottle) and Charles Shaw comes out on top!
$3 Purchased from Trader Joes ($2 in California)
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Strong cherries in the bouquet.
  • Notes of green apple.
  • Hints of oak and plum.
  • Medium tannins – decanting is recommended.
  • An easy to drink wine, that can be enjoyed with a variety of foods.
  • Makes a great Sangria.
  • This wine is not the girl that wears Gucci, Fendi, or Prada. She wears baggy sweats and a baseball cap with her hair pulled through the back and she is proud of it. If you can get past the department store store clothes she wears, you will find she is definitely worth taking the time to get to know. Unlike the Cheap Red Wine we strongly suggest trying this bargain wine out.

Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon (California 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 9:19 am
Avalon Cabernet A Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County California.
$10 Purchased at Trader Joe’s
Three Trophies
  • A smooth wine with medium tannins.
  • Slightly smokey.
  • Fruit flavors of berries and peaches.
  • Smooth and drinkable.
  • Good wine for the price.
  • Nothing overly exciting here but you do get a better product than the price projects and that is the main reason for the three trophies. Sorta like going to a Baseball game and seeing extra innings…a little extra baseball for your buck that you did not expect…but not as thrilling as hockey or football.

Four and a Half Trophies
  • A dryer wine that is very earthy.
  • Notes of cigar and leather yet it’s not overpowering.
  • Easy to drink.
  • So much better than its price suggests.
  • The wine is like the girl that can make a $15.00 dress from a vintage clothing shop look like a Juicy Couture off the rack at Saks Fifth Avenue.
