Sagelands Vineyard Four Corners Cabernet (Washington, 2006)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 8:30 am
Sagelands Cabernet 2006 This is a Cabernet from the Columbia Valley in Washington.  We really enjoyed the Merlot from the same winery so we were really looking forward to trying this wine when we spotted it on the shelf.
$12 from Total Wine
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of earth and deep dark berries
  • Soft and smooth in the mouth
  • Strong tannins in the finish giving it a tart cranberry taste
  • Interesting yet unrefined.  Like a sports car that is a little too loud both in engine sound and color…it may put some people off yet who knows…in a few years it has the potential of being a classic…

Columbia Crest Two Vines Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington, 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 8:31 am
Columbia Crest This wine is a Cabernet from the Columbia Valley in Washington. I picked this up at Fresh and Easy but I have had it before. It can be found in Fry’s and Basha’s but the price at Fresh and Easy was the cheapest I have seen. The Two Vines line from Columbia Crest has produced many “Best Buy” and “Best Value” designations from wine aficionados.
$6.00 Purchased at Fresh and Easy
Four Trophies
  • Strong aromas of fruit that is dominated by Black Cherry
  • Nice balance between sweet and dry with moderate tannins
  • Cherry and oak flavors right away and a hint of cocoa on the finish
  • Full bodied and robust
  • A little sharp on the tongue at first but decanting led to a very soft and velvety feeling in the mouth
  • A wonderful and enjoyable wine for the price….Like eating a burger from a charcoal grill…it is still just a burger but that charcoal grill makes it taste like so much more.

Gordon Brothers Merlot (Columbia Valley, Washington 2005)

Category: MerlotEddie @ 8:34 am
gordon-brothers-merlot.jpg This wine is a Merlot from the Columbia Valley of Washington. This wine was a great little find. I noticed that Wine Spectator gave the 2005 91 points; but the 2006 had not been rated yet. As I looked through the box containing all the Merlot I only saw the 2006….but to my delight as I was about to give up I found a 2005 at the bottom. If you can find this we would recommend trying it. We are also planning on going back and picking up the 2006; so be on the lookout for that review.
$14 at COSTCO
Four Trophies
  • Very Rich and rustic
  • Scents of leather and wood
  • Very masculine and earthy in aroma
  • Initial burst of black cherries in the the taste fading into a more rugged woody flavor
  • Nicely balanced and structured
  • Moderate Tannins but decanting smoothed it out some.
  • This wine is a warm fireplace on a snowy Christmas morning. Friends can gather around it while it gives off a warmth that makes everyone feel comfortable and happy to be there.
