La Parra Loca (Spain, 2006)

Category: TempranilloEddie @ 6:56 pm
No Bottle Image Available I picked this wine up because I was having blackened salmon for dinner.  I figured a nice Tempranillo would go great with this spicy fish dish.  The wine is actually a blend of Tempranillo and Shiraz.  The label even recommended that it be served with spicy fish dishes.  The label also informed me that I would be tasting intense black fruit flavors and hints of vanilla and spice.  Unfortunately, I did not taste any of these things.  The wine was quite bland but it did hold up well to the spicy fish.  In fact, the only reason it got 1.5 trophies instead of 1 was because it did hold up to the dinner.  The only way I would recommend this wine would be with a meal that was quite hearty, spicy and flavorful.  On its own the flavors were boring and muddled.
$7 from Fresh & Easy
One and a Half Trophies

  • Muddled and indecisive
  • Smooth in the mouth yet harsh when swallowed.
  • Lingering bitter tastes like that of grape seeds
  • On the tip of the tongue it was sweet like blackberries but soured towards the back of the mouth
  • Like going to a nice Spanish restaurant and expecting an exotic and enchanting meal but ending up with fried rice and dried beef.

Columbia Crest Two Vines Vinyard 10 (Washington, 2005)

Category: BlendEddie @ 2:01 pm
I picked up this wine because I have had Columbia Crest Two Vine series before and was never disappointed.  The price is right and the quality has always left me impressed.  Anyway, this one caught my eye because I did not really know what i was in the mood for and since it was a blend I figured I would give it a try.
$7 at Safeway
Four and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of Strawberry and clove
  • Cranberry and spice in the flavor
  • Somewhat tart but in a pleasant way
  • Slight taste of a really ripe and juicy plum on the finish
  • Interesting, intriguing, and keeps you attentive…like a very good college professor that engages you with so many things that you wonder where the time went in the class….ok..ok..ok…not really…it is more like the class clown that keeps you awake in a boring philosophy class because you never know what he is going to do next…Yup…thats more like.  This wine was a lot of fun!!!!!

Ambas Malbec (Argentina, 2007)

Category: MalbecMike @ 7:30 am
No Bottle Image Available This wine is a Malbec from Argentina. We picked this up because we saw that it was a fairly new arrival to Fresh & Easy.
$7 from Fresh & Easy
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of ripe fruit.
  • Masculine notes of leather and spice in the taste.
  • High tannin content makes it a bit harsh in the mouth.
  • Rich and robust tastes of oak and cigar with a lingering finish.
  • This wine is not the like the weight watchers breakfast of fresh fruit and yogurt….this wine is much more like a stick to your ribs country style breakfast of steak and eggs with a side of corn beef hash.

Smoking Loon Cabernet Sauvignon (California, 2006)

Category: CabernetMike @ 6:59 am
Smoking Loon Cabernet Sauvignon This is a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley in California. I picked up a bottle of this wine after having Chinese food and I wish I had it during the meal. It was great on it’s own thought and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up again.
$7 Purchased from Bashas.
Four Trophies
  • Hints of blackberries and smoke in the aroma with a touch of pepper and spice.
  • Nice balance of rich dark berries and earthy tones.
  • Good full bodied flavor that would go great with your favorite dinner dish.
  • Slightly sweet at the start, but finishes nicely with earthy notes.
  • This is a great Cab for the price. Loons always remind me of Canada, and this bottle was no exception. This is a down to earth well mannered bottle of wine that has a bit of an edge to it. It would try hard not to offend anyone that it didn’t know very well. You could serve this bottle of wine to anyone and be proud of it.
