Wrangler Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington, 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 3:53 pm
Wrangler Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington, 2004) This was a review that we did between periods of the 2008 season opener of the Phoenix Coyotes.  We thought it would be a good bottle to commemorate the occasion.
$10 at Bashas
Three Trophies
  • Hints of mint and and a slight scent of alcohol in the aroma
  • Flavors of prunes at first
  • Medium to long finish with hints of clove
  • Red apple on the tip of the tongue
  • Really interesting wine with a great label….but not really what you expected.  It is like picking up a video that you have never heard of before but the cover looked interesting.  While it may not have been the best movie, you stil enjoyed if because you got it on video and did not spend a fortune seeing it in the theater.

Torres Coronas Tempranillo (Spain, 2004)

Category: TempranilloMike @ 8:27 am
No Bottle Image Available This is a tempranillo from Spain. This was another of our 4th of July wines that we had that day.
$10 from Fresh & Easy
Four Trophies
  • Aromas of leather with a hint of peppermint behind it
  • Earthy and woody in the initial taste
  • A lot of tannins, even after decanting for 1 hour.
  • Hearty and robust – would be great with a steak.
  • A very intensely masculine wine would be akin to fighting a bull….or running with them…neither is one you would want to do on our own. So to is this wine…it must be paired with a rich and hearty meal in order to be fully enjoyed.

Yelcho Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile, 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonEddie @ 5:09 pm
Yelcho Cabernet Sauvignon I picked this wine up to have with some people who were going to be sitting by the fire pit at our condo this evening. My choice for it was based on finding something new and since I had not had a Chilean wine in some time I figured I would give it a shot. Outside of the high acid content I would not say that I was disappointed. I suppose it would have been much better with a meal though.
$8 at Frys
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Fruity but musty aroma
  • Tastes of blackberries at first and a very slight hint of peaches
  • Raisins and toasted oak mixed some black pepper
  • A little more acidic than I normally like
  • This wine is a little like dating a girl who can be very sarcastic…ya like her a lot but sometimes her sarcasm in front of others kinda makes ya cringe

Columbia Crest Two Vines Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington, 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 8:31 am
Columbia Crest This wine is a Cabernet from the Columbia Valley in Washington. I picked this up at Fresh and Easy but I have had it before. It can be found in Fry’s and Basha’s but the price at Fresh and Easy was the cheapest I have seen. The Two Vines line from Columbia Crest has produced many “Best Buy” and “Best Value” designations from wine aficionados.
$6.00 Purchased at Fresh and Easy
Four Trophies
  • Strong aromas of fruit that is dominated by Black Cherry
  • Nice balance between sweet and dry with moderate tannins
  • Cherry and oak flavors right away and a hint of cocoa on the finish
  • Full bodied and robust
  • A little sharp on the tongue at first but decanting led to a very soft and velvety feeling in the mouth
  • A wonderful and enjoyable wine for the price….Like eating a burger from a charcoal grill…it is still just a burger but that charcoal grill makes it taste like so much more.

Ecco Domani Cabernet Merlot (Italy, 2004)

Category: BlendMike @ 6:49 am
Ecco Domani Cabernet Merlot This is a Cabernet Merlot blend from Italy with 53% Cabernet and 47% Merlot.
$8 Purchased from Bashas.
One and a Half Trophies
  • Notes of blackberries in the bouquet.
  • Smooth and mild tasting but also a very flat.
  • A medium finish with hints of spice and mild tannins.
  • This is the Budweiser, or Molson of wine. It has been mass produced and marketed so as not to offend anyones taste… kinda like listening to the latest boy band… You know who they are and what they sing but once you hear one of their songs you wonder why you did not change the station.

Tinhorn Creek Merlot (British Columbia 2004)

Category: MerlotMike @ 11:47 am
Tinhorn Creek Merlot This is a Merlot from the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any retailer the sells Canadian wines here in Arizona. You may have a hard time finding this wine outside of Canada. If you are ever in Canada we highly recommend that you pick up some wine and share it with your friends.
$17
Four Trophies
  • Dark berry flavors.
  • Decanting is recommended.
  • Smooth and spicy.
  • Great with virtually any meat dish from burgers to steaks.
  • This wine is like a wild child….time in the decanter will sooth out some of her rough edges but still leave her with the strength and spiciness that makes her personality so outgoing and adventurous.

Avalon Cabernet Sauvignon (California 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonMike @ 9:19 am
Avalon Cabernet A Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County California.
$10 Purchased at Trader Joe’s
Three Trophies
  • A smooth wine with medium tannins.
  • Slightly smokey.
  • Fruit flavors of berries and peaches.
  • Smooth and drinkable.
  • Good wine for the price.
  • Nothing overly exciting here but you do get a better product than the price projects and that is the main reason for the three trophies. Sorta like going to a Baseball game and seeing extra innings…a little extra baseball for your buck that you did not expect…but not as thrilling as hockey or football.
