Dancing Bull Zinfandel (California, 2005)

Category: ZinfandelEddie @ 4:46 pm
Dancing Bull Zinfandel (California, 2005) I picked this wine up because I was looking for something a little different than the traditional Chianti to have with my Penne and sausage that I was making tonight.  I normally shy away from Zinfandels but for some reason I figured I would give this a try.  The one I picked up is the 2005 and I noticed that they had the 2006 there as well.  I am really interested in trying both of them.
$8 From Fresh & Easy
One and a Half Trophies

  • A bit overpowering at first
  • Sort of vinegary in the beginning
  • Fruit flavors are muddled and hard to pick apart
  • I could taste a bit of black cherry and this may sound weird but I detected a slight hint of kiwi on the finish
  • After letting the wine breathe for a while I began to pick up some raspberry in the taste
  • This is a wine that would really benefit from decanting.
  • This wine is like the new guy at the office.  He comes in and is very loud and somewhat obnoxious.  You are turned off by his bad breath that smells of rotten pepperoni and you are a little upset over the fact that you have to work with him.  In time his hygiene may improve to the point that it is bearable and he is slowly becoming less abrasive…but….you still may not want to have him over for dinner.

La Parra Loca (Spain, 2006)

Category: TempranilloEddie @ 6:56 pm
No Bottle Image Available I picked this wine up because I was having blackened salmon for dinner.  I figured a nice Tempranillo would go great with this spicy fish dish.  The wine is actually a blend of Tempranillo and Shiraz.  The label even recommended that it be served with spicy fish dishes.  The label also informed me that I would be tasting intense black fruit flavors and hints of vanilla and spice.  Unfortunately, I did not taste any of these things.  The wine was quite bland but it did hold up well to the spicy fish.  In fact, the only reason it got 1.5 trophies instead of 1 was because it did hold up to the dinner.  The only way I would recommend this wine would be with a meal that was quite hearty, spicy and flavorful.  On its own the flavors were boring and muddled.

One and a Half Trophies

  • Muddled and indecisive
  • Smooth in the mouth yet harsh when swallowed.
  • Lingering bitter tastes like that of grape seeds
  • On the tip of the tongue it was sweet like blackberries but soured towards the back of the mouth
  • Like going to a nice Spanish restaurant and expecting an exotic and enchanting meal but ending up with fried rice and dried beef.

Category: BlendMike @ 6:49 am
Ecco Domani Cabernet Merlot This is a Cabernet Merlot blend from Italy with 53% Cabernet and 47% Merlot.
$8 Purchased from Bashas.
One and a Half Trophies
  • Notes of blackberries in the bouquet.
  • Smooth and mild tasting but also a very flat.
  • A medium finish with hints of spice and mild tannins.
  • This is the Budweiser, or Molson of wine. It has been mass produced and marketed so as not to offend anyones taste… kinda like listening to the latest boy band… You know who they are and what they sing but once you hear one of their songs you wonder why you did not change the station.

Black Opal Cabernet Merlot (Australia, 2006)

Category: BlendMike @ 8:16 am
Black Opal Cabernet Merlot This is a blend of Cabernet and Merlot from the Black Opal wineries of South Eastern Australia. We remember enjoying the 2004 version of this wine. We also tried the 2005 and did not like it nearly as much as the 2004. Sadly it seems the 2006 is also disappointing.
$9 Purchased at Target
One and a Half Trophies
  • Very subtle bouquet of strawberries.
  • Slightly acidic in both start and finish with high tannins, decanting is highly recommended.
  • Citrus and plumb flavors (with the citrus being the dominant flavor)
  • Smooths out a bit after some time in the decanter.
  • This is definitely a wine to have with a meal, we would not recommend having it on it’s own. It may earn another half trophy or two if enjoyed with a juicy burger or steak. So essentially, this wine is like a steak sauce… it’s pretty much only enjoyable if you have it with steak.

Cheap Red Wine (California)

Category: BlendMike @ 7:11 am
Cheap Red Wine This wine is a blend of unknown grapes from California.
$6 Purchased at Whole Foods
One and a Half Trophies
  • Sweet bouquet.
  • Acidic with hints of grapefruit and cranberries.
  • Not very complex, and the flavors seem to be mumbled together quite a bit.
  • Jammy and a little hard.
  • This wine tastes even sweeter with food.
  • This is like the non-conformist girl that does not wear make-up or take regular showers….she screams that she is independent and goes against the grain. She is proud of the fact that it only cost her a couple of bucks to get dressed each day and she ain’t changing for nobody. Our advice is to walk right by her cause she will get on your nerves.

Big House Red (California 2005)

Category: BlendMike @ 2:30 pm
Big House Red A California Blend of Sangiovese. Carignane, and Charbono. This wine gets it’s name from the fact that the vinyard it comes from is right next to the Soledad State Prison in California….hence…The Big House
$10
One and a Half Trophies
  • This would be good as a starter wine and would go with lots of foods.
  • Simple, easy to drink.
  • Starts out strong but the finish disappears quickly.
  • Tastes good but not much too it, not complex.
  • Easy to have with pretty much anything.
  • The wine for the non-wine drinker.
  • She is a girl that does not have too much depth to her. She can get boring in a hurry. This is not to say she is bad; just don’t take out to a five star dinner. She would be fine with a pizza.

One and a Half Trophies
  • Very simple, easy drinking wine.
  • Not a lot of depth.
  • Robust but not very complex flavors.
