Fox Creek Shiraz Reserve (Australia, 1998)

Category: ShirazMike @ 10:24 am
Fox Creek Shiraz Reserve (Australia, 1998) This is a Shiraz from McLaren Vale in Australia.  This wine was given my sister-in-law Natasha, and we enjoyed it together over the Christmas break.  We probably would have given this wine the coveted 5 trophies had it not been so pricey.  We’ve had a few wines in the past that were just as impressive but sold in the high $20 or $30 range.
$100+  (We’re told it is also available for the higher prices of $200-$400, but we found it for $120 online).
Four and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of blackberry with a hint of sweet strawberry at the end.
  • Tastes of dark berries, plum and a bit of rich chocolate.
  • A medium length (somewhat long for American oak) very satisfying finish.
  • A fantastic food or evening wine, very versatile.
  • An exotic foreign supermodel that has been introduced to you through a friend of a friend… somehow you charm her into a night out… you expect a very superficial and fun experience, but as the evening progresses it becomes clear that she is well educated, smart and very interesting… you have a great time, but you never see her again (you are just a regular dude after all, and she’s a supermodel).

Pine & Post Merlot (Washington, 2006)

Category: Merlot, ShirazMike @ 6:51 pm
No Bottle Image Available This wine is a Merlot from Washington. We each had this wine on separate occasions and we both liked it a lot. I had mine with some friends from our condo while we had cigars and all my friends really liked it as did I.  That being said…..the second time I had this wine was tonight and for some reason it did not appeal to us as much as it did before.  It was much to light to go with the meal we had and found it was easily overpowered.
$7 from Fresh & Easy
Two and a Half Trophies

  • Very light and subtle aromas of fruit.
  • Bold cherry off the start, but disappears quickly.
  • Light plumb tastes in the finish.
  • Overall mouth feel is very light and watery.
  • A bit mundane overall but not a bad wine for sharing with friends on a summer day. It is kinda like going to the movies with your sister….sure you may have a good time with her and enjoy the show but it still is a movie with your sibling.

Boarding Pass (Australia, 2005)

Category: ShirazMike @ 9:30 am
Boarding Pass (Australia, 2005) This wine is a Shiraz from South Australia.
$15 from Costco
Four Trophies
  • Smells like green apple.
  • Very rich and creamy mouth feel.
  • Full bodied.
  • Peppery and bold with a great finish.
  • Looking at the label we did not expect much from this wine. It was kinda like going out on Halloween and expecting those little bite size candies that you usually get……but…every once in a while you run into that house that that gives you the full size candy bar….now that is exciting!!

Charles Shaw Shiraz (California, 2007)

Category: ShirazMike @ 6:42 am
No Bottle Image Available This is a Shiraz from California. This is one of Trader Joes’ “Two Buck Chuck” wines. We really liked the Cabernet and thought we’d give the Shiraz a review.
$3 from Trader Joes
Half Trophy
  • Jammy aromas with a hint of vanilla.
  • Very acidic and sharp in the mouth.
  • It’s really hard to get past the acidity in this wine – it masks any good flavors that might be there.
  • A hint of oak.
  • Remember how Joe Blow Red was like someone who rubbed you the wrong way for a while until you found out that you really had a lot in common and grew to value their friendship…..well this is more like the person that rubs you the wrong way the first time and continues to be a pain in the butt for the rest of your life. Leave this bottle on the shelf since it is absolutely horrible. We expect better of Trader Joe’s.

Layer Cake Shiraz (Australia, 2005)

Category: ShirazMike @ 6:44 am
Layer Cake Shiraz This wine is a Shiraz from the Barossa Valley in South Australia. This is our first review of a Shiraz wine. Shiraz wines are the same as Syrah (or Sirah) wines with the difference being that they are from Australia.
$12 Purchased at Cost Plus World Market
Two and a Half Trophies
  • Rich and dark with purple hues.
  • Aromas of blackberries and chocolate.
  • Tastes of vanilla, spice and berries.
  • Would go best with big flavored foods.
  • Bold and a little harsh with the alcohol taste coming through.
  • I was expecting this wine to be layered with goodness and many different dimensions. Instead, this wine was more like a layer cake that sat in the sun all day, and the layers all kind of melted together. Not horrible, but I was disappointed.

Virgin Vines Shiraz (California, 2005)

Category: ShirazMike @ 10:15 pm
Virgin Vines Shiraz This is a Shiraz from California, and is the ony red varietal of Virgin Vines. This vinyard and the wine it produces is owned by globe trotting, adventurist, and multi billionaire Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines. We picked this up from Bashas when we were looking for a new wine to review. We kind of stumbled on it and were intrigued by the connection to Branson.
$10 Purchased at Bashas
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Deep dark purple hues.
  • Aromas of vanilla, caramel and blueberry.
  • Slightly sweet yet still dry with moderate tannins.
  • Strong vanilla and caramel in the mouth with a slightly musty taste.
  • This wine may not be the superstar that travels in first class; but it is definitely not the talkative, annoying, and sometimes smelly person you sit next to in coach. Go ahead and give this wine a try.
