Reflexion Tempranillo (Spain, 2003)

Category: TempranilloMike @ 3:55 pm
No Bottle Image Available This wine is a Tempranillo from the Rioja region of Spain. We explained a little about what a Rioja was in a previous review on Marques De Riscal
The bottle suggests opening it several hours prior to drinking and we would agree. We found that with the use of a decanter that an hour was all it took to be ready. Decanting really smoothed out the wine and added a wonderful texture. This wine has received many accolades from other reviewers and being that the price was only $10.00 we would agree with them.
$10 at Fresh & Easy
Four and a Half Trophies
  • Sweet black cherries dominate the aroma with an undertone of spice
  • Very soft and velvety in the mouth
  • Cherries and plum in the taste
  • Earthy with oak flavors come through at the end.
  • A great wine that is a little bit harsh right out of the bottle. Decanting and time is strongly suggested….much like a relationship that takes time and effort so to does this wine…The time you give it to breath will reward you for your wait and you will be left with a very easy drinking, smooth and comfortable wine.

House Wine Blend (Washington, 2005)

Category: BlendMike @ 6:44 am
House Wine 2005 This wine is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc from the Columbia Valley in Washington State. Overall it was not too bad. though for the price you could do a lot better than this. It tended to ba a bit on the boring side.
$10 from Fry’s
Two and a Half Trophies
  • Aromas of sulfer and dark berries
  • Quite tart at the beginning.
  • Hints of green apple.
  • Simple, smooth and medium bodied.
  • A little generic and run-of-the-mill tasting. It did not offend but did not overly excite either…a few posts back we talked about a wine being like a plain looking librarian that when she took her hair down and glasses off you said Wow ……well….this wine is like the librarian that takes her glasses off and lets her hair down and you say….Yup…still a librarian.

Tapena Garnacha (Spain, 2005)

Category: GarnachaMike @ 6:39 am
Tapena Garnacha 2005 This wine is a Garnacha from Spain. We highly recommended the Tempranillo from Tapena, so I thought I’d give the Garnacha a try. This wine would be enjoyed much more by someone who prefers sweeter wine. We enjoy dryer wines, so go ahead and add a trophy if you think you like sweeter wines.
$10 from Bashas
Two and a Half Trophies
  • Very ripe aromas of berries and cherries.
  • Has a strong sweet taste, especially before decanting.
  • Tastes of almond, vanilla and jammy berries.
  • Decanting is highly recommended as it mellows the wine out quite a bit.
  • This wine is like that sweet and naive girl you meet one day. Once you get to know her though, you realize that she’s actually not that naive at all… but still very sweet.

Yelcho Cabernet Sauvignon (Chile, 2004)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonEddie @ 5:09 pm
Yelcho Cabernet Sauvignon I picked this wine up to have with some people who were going to be sitting by the fire pit at our condo this evening. My choice for it was based on finding something new and since I had not had a Chilean wine in some time I figured I would give it a shot. Outside of the high acid content I would not say that I was disappointed. I suppose it would have been much better with a meal though.
$8 at Frys
Three and a Half Trophies
  • Fruity but musty aroma
  • Tastes of blackberries at first and a very slight hint of peaches
  • Raisins and toasted oak mixed some black pepper
  • A little more acidic than I normally like
  • This wine is a little like dating a girl who can be very sarcastic…ya like her a lot but sometimes her sarcasm in front of others kinda makes ya cringe

Blue Grouse Pinot Noir (British Columbia, 2003)

Category: Pinot NoirMike @ 10:16 am
Blue Grouse 2003 This is a Pinot Noir from Vancouver Island. I first tried this wine at Haro’s Restaurant in the Sidney Pier Hotel on Vancouver Island. I enjoyed it so much that I brought a bottle home to enjoy again.
$20 CAD from British Columbia Liquor
Four Trophies
  • Aromas of fruit with a slight touch of mint
  • Nutmeg, and anise were also detected on the nose
  • Very smooth with soft tannins.
  • Slightly sweet off the start
  • Very dry finish
  • Subtle cherry flavor mixed with oak and earth
  • A great wine with an incredible bouquet that is very different from the taste….much like a girl in your class that you do not really know outside of class; but once you do get to know her you find that she is very different from your original conceptions. That is not a bad thing…just and unexpected twist.

Ombretta Chianti (Italy, 2006)

Category: ChiantiMike @ 7:08 am
No Bottle Image Available This wine is a Chianti from Tuscany. Chiantis are very good buys and you can find decent bottles for around $10.00. You can get great bottles for around $20.00. Chiantis….like most Italian wines are built for food. If you are looking for a wine that goes great with a meal yet does not break your wallet than you should try out a few Chiantis and this is one we would recommend starting with.
$6.00 From Fresh and Easy
Three Trophies
  • Deep purple color
  • Rustic aroma with hints of berries
  • Flavors of toasted oak
  • Black Cherry notes
  • Solid buy at $6.00…Its like playing softball with your old glove that you have had for years….It may not be as fancy or as nice as some of your friends gloves but you know it will work for you and after all……whether it works for you is all that really matters

La Boca Cabernet Sauvignon (Argentina, 2007)

Category: Cabernet SauvignonEddie @ 6:50 am
la-boca-cabernet-sauvignon.jpg So I was standing outside the other day grilling up a steak and drinking the last bit of the Tarazza Malbec that I had. Someone I know who lives in the condo complex we live in came by and we started talking. We talked about wine, cigars, and beer. I made the comment that I wish I had some more wine to have with my steak with and he kindly offered up a bottle of La Boca Cabernet that he is a big fan of. This wine is not as big or as bold as your traditional Cab, so I did knock a trophy off for that but overall it was not too bad. Understand this…It is a 4 dollar bottle of wine…if you are looking for something that tastes decent and are not into finding all the subtle nuances and flavors a wine can have than go ahead and give this a try.
$4 at Trader Joes
Two Trophies
  • Simple
  • Cherries on the tip of the tongue
  • Hints of grapefruit at first followed by a very dry finish
  • Pleasant tasting but too simple and not enough depth
  • This wine is like an attractive girl that is very shallow…You can handle her in doses every now and then but you do not want to spend a great amount of time or money on her….Luckily for you this one is very cheap
